Web Design and Lead
Generation in Metro Detroit.
Four million people, three counties, and a service area that almost certainly crosses at least two of them.
That is the actual problem with local search in this market, and most of what gets sold here ignores it. We are in Waterford, in Oakland County, and we say so rather than implying a Detroit address.

What we do for Detroit Metro businesses
Six things. In a market this size the question is less which service and more how far you should be trying to reach with it.
- Local SEO The foundation, with one hard limit worth knowing up front: you are not going to rank in the map pack twenty miles from your address, and anyone selling you that is selling doorway pages with a penalty attached. Local SEO works on the towns you can actually serve.
- Google Ads management The honest answer for reach beyond your immediate ring. Where organic proximity runs out, paid is the mechanism that crosses a county line, and in a market this size that is most businesses.
- Web design and development The site itself, and the thing that does the work at distance. A customer two counties away is deciding on your website because your profile is never going to reach them.
- Print design and printing Real inside your home ring and close to useless outside it. Worth it for trades and storefronts, not for anyone trying to cover three counties.
- Ecommerce and portals Selling online, which is the one service where the geography on this page stops mattering. If your product ships, none of the distance advice applies to you.
- Logo design and branding Only where it earns its money. In a mature market it helps you look like you belong, and it will not carry a weak offer.
Drive time, not radius, and that is the single most useful thing on this page. A circle drawn around your pin crosses water, freeways and county lines that your customers will not. Build the service area around where you will genuinely go, and let paid handle everything past it.
Drive time, not radius
Every service-area map we are shown is a circle. Metro Detroit does not work in circles.
-
North–south is fast
I-75, Telegraph, Woodward and Van Dyke move you a long way quickly. A business on one of those corridors can serve a much longer strip than a circle would suggest.
-
East–west is slow
Outside of I-696 and M-59, crossing the metro sideways is surface roads and lights. Twelve miles east can take longer than twenty miles north.
-
I-696 is a real boundary
Not just a road. Crews, customers and referral patterns all behave differently on either side of it, and pretending otherwise makes for an unrealistic service area.
-
Rush hour doubles everything
A 9am emergency call in Troy from Waterford is a different job than the same call at 2pm. If you promise same-day, the promise has to survive M-59 at 5pm.
When we set up a service area, we ask what you actually drive to and what you turn down, not what looks impressive on a map. A service area you cannot honestly cover produces bad reviews from people you should never have accepted.
The three counties
They are genuinely different markets and they buy differently.
-
Oakland
The widest income spread in the state, from Pontiac to Bloomfield Hills within ten minutes. High expectations, high competition, and customers who will genuinely compare three quotes and check your reviews before calling. Published pricing works well here.
- 1.2m people
-
Macomb
More price-sensitive, more referral-driven, and more likely to call the first business that answers. Speed-to-response matters more here than a polished site. Strong trades economy and a lot of repeat work.
- 870k people
-
Wayne and Detroit
Two markets in one. Downtown and Midtown behave like a dense urban market, walkability, restaurants, professional services. Much of the rest is neighborhood-scale with strong local loyalty and a real premium on being a business that shows up and stays.
- 1.7m people
Where we are. Waterford, in the northern half of Oakland County. Most of our clients are within about forty minutes, which by the logic above means north Oakland, north Macomb and the western suburbs come easiest. That is a statement about our own drive time, not a limit on who we build for.
What actually works, by distance
Three rings, three different strategies. Almost nobody sets it up this way and it is the single biggest structural improvement available to a Metro Detroit service business.
-
Within about 15 minutes
Win the map pack
Proximity is on your side, so the profile does the heavy lifting: complete categories, every service listed, real photos, reviews coming in steadily. It is also where your margins are best, because the drive is fifteen minutes rather than fifty.
-
Roughly 15 to 30 minutes
Compete, and expect to place rather than win
You will show in the map pack some of the time, for some searches, depending on who else is there. Real service-area pages matter here, and reviews that mention the town by name matter more than people realize. So does being physically closer than your competitor.
-
Beyond about 30 minutes
Win organic, and forget the map pack
Below the map is a set of ordinary results, and those are winnable at distance with genuinely good pages. It is slower, it converts differently, and it is real. What it is not is a map pack listing, and any proposal promising you one at that range is selling you something.
The uncomfortable version. If most of your revenue has to come from a city thirty minutes away, the real answer may be a second location with a real address and a real profile, not more content. We will tell you that even though it is not something we sell.
Where Detroit Metro actually sits
Three counties and four million people. We work from Oakland County, and the honest limits of that are set out below.
Two things are worth reading off that map before you spend money on local search here.
- The counties behave like separate markets. Wayne, Oakland and Macomb have different economies and different competition, and a plan written for one of them will misfire in the others.
- Distance decays fast in a mature market. What works at five miles, fifteen miles and thirty miles are three different strategies, and most of what gets sold here pretends they are one.

You serve three counties. Google knows one address.
This is the question every business here eventually asks, and the honest answer is not the one most agencies give.
You are a plumber in Waterford. You happily drive to Royal Oak, Troy, Novi and Sterling Heights. But when somebody in Royal Oak searches “plumber near me”, Google shows them plumbers in Royal Oak, because proximity to the searcher is one of the three things that decides the map pack, and it is the one nobody can change.
So you rank beautifully at home, disappear fifteen miles away, and someone sells you a package of city pages to fix it.
You will not win the map pack in a city twenty miles from your address. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you doorway pages, and those carry a penalty now rather than a benefit.
What you can win at distance is the organic results underneath the map, the blue links, which are not distance-weighted the same way. And you can win the map pack in the ring closest to you, where most of your profitable work is anyway because the drive is shorter.

You are entering a mature market
Metro Detroit is not an underserved market and pretending otherwise sets up a bad first six months.
In most trades here there is at least one established business with four hundred reviews, fifteen years of history and a name people already know. You are not going to displace them by launching a nicer website, and any strategy that depends on doing so is a strategy that fails.
What beats an incumbent here
- Being closer. They cannot be everywhere. The map pack rewards proximity, and there is a ring around you where you are the nearest good option.
- Being specific. They rank for “roofing”. You can own “flat roof repair” or “ice dam removal” or “cedar shake” and win the searches that convert best.
- Answering faster. Large operations route calls. If you answer at 7pm on a Saturday and they do not, you win that job regardless of review count.
- Review velocity, not review total. Eight new reviews a month is a stronger signal than four hundred from six years ago. That is a gap you can close in a year.
- Actually being findable at all. A surprising share of established local businesses have an incomplete profile and a five-second website. Reputation carried them; it will not carry them forever.
The play in a mature market is not to be better than everyone. It is to be the obvious choice inside a defined area for a defined problem.
Towns with their own page
Each of these has its own economy, its own competitive picture and its own page.

Free, and worth doing before you hire anyone
Four things worth doing before you pay anyone, including us. No email required for any of them.
- The local SEO playbook Twenty-five things in four groups. Finish your profile properly, ask every customer for a review the same day, fix your NAP everywhere.
- Audit your own ad account Five checks. The search terms report alone typically finds $400 to $900 of monthly waste on a $3,000 budget.
- Do you own your website? Five checks on the site you have right now. Most people who think they own their site do not.
- The Michigan marketing calendar When each trade actually gets busy here, and how far ahead the work has to be in place to catch it.

Straight answers
The questions that come up on almost every call from this market.
Can you get me ranking in a city I do not have an address in?
In the organic results below the map, yes, and that is real work worth doing. In the map pack itself, no, proximity to the searcher is a ranking factor nobody can fake, and the tactics that pretend otherwise get profiles suspended. We would rather tell you that now than take money for it.
Should I build a page for every town I serve?
For the towns where you genuinely work and can say something specific, yes, a handful, with real content about working there. For every town within forty miles, no. Two hundred near-identical city pages is a 2014 tactic with a 2026 penalty attached.
My competitor has 400 reviews. Is it hopeless?
No, but be realistic about the shape of it. Review velocity is its own signal, a business gaining eight a month reads as more current than one sitting on four hundred from 2019. Start asking every customer today and you are somewhere different in six months. It will not happen in six weeks.
Would a second address help?
A genuine second location with a real address, real staff and real signage, yes, materially. A virtual office, a mailbox or a friend’s spare room, no, and it will get the profile suspended. This is the most common bad advice in this market and it is worth being blunt about.
Do you work in Macomb and Wayne, or just Oakland?
All three, plus the edges of Livingston and Washtenaw. We are in Waterford, so north Oakland and north Macomb are closest, but the map pack ranks your address and not ours, where we sit only affects how easily we can drop by.
What does a lead cost around here?
Entirely dependent on the trade and the season. What matters more is what a customer is worth to you, because a $200 lead is excellent for a roofer and ruinous for an oil change. Bring your average job value and close rate to the call and the arithmetic answers itself.
