Web Design and Lead
Generation in Ortonville, Michigan.
We have a client up here. Most agencies do not, and most of them will quietly tell you a town this size is not worth the effort.
They have the math backwards. Fewer searches also means fewer competitors doing this properly, and that combination is the cheapest ranking opportunity anywhere on this site.

What we do for Ortonville businesses
Six things, and we will talk you out of two of them. Published prices, the same here as in Birmingham.
- Local SEO The highest-value thing on this list for a business up here, and the cheapest place in the county to do it. A claimed profile, a consistent address and a review habit will put most Ortonville trades in the map pack, because the competition largely is not trying.
- Web design and development The site itself. Plenty of trades up here have run on reputation and a truck for twenty years with nothing findable behind them. That works until the people who knew you retire.
- Print design and printing Truck lettering, yard signs, door hangers. Worth more per dollar in a small town than in a city, because a sign on M-15 is seen by most of the people who might hire you rather than a fraction of a percent of them.
- Google Ads management Usually the wrong answer here, and we will tell you that rather than sell it. Search volume this far north does not support the management fee for most trades. The exception is a business whose catchment reaches down toward Clarkston and the county.
- Ecommerce and portals Selling online, which is the one service where being in a small town stops mattering entirely. If your product ships, your market is not Ortonville and the whole calculation on this page changes.
- Logo design and branding Almost never the first thing to buy here. In a town this size your reputation is already the brand, and it is doing more work than a logo ever will.
Notice that two of those six say do not buy this. That is not modesty. Ads and branding are the two services most often sold into small towns where they do not pay for themselves, and we would rather lose the line item than take money for something the search volume cannot support.
The small-town math
Everyone who has told you a town this size is not worth marketing in has looked at one half of the equation.
Search volume up here is genuinely low. That is true and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What people leave out is the other side: the number of businesses competing properly for those searches is close to zero.
What that changes
- Ranking is cheap. In Troy or Birmingham you are fighting agencies with budgets. Here you are frequently competing against unclaimed profiles and sites that have not been touched since 2016. A Presence build at $2,500 can do work in Ortonville that $12,000 would not buy you in the county’s south end.
- A small number of calls is still a good year. The relevant question is never how many searches exist, it is what one customer is worth to you. For a septic, well or excavating job the answer is usually large enough that a handful of calls pays for the whole engine.
- Your catchment is bigger than the village. Businesses up here routinely serve a radius that reaches well past the township and across the county line. The searches you can win are not limited to people typing the town name.
- Reputation already works in your favor. In a small town word of mouth is genuinely strong. The gap is that none of it is written down anywhere a search engine can see. Turning an existing reputation into visible reviews is the shortest distance to results anywhere on this site.
The honest limit. This argument works for trades with a real ticket. It does not rescue a business whose average job is under a hundred dollars and whose customers are all within a mile. If that is you, the free playbook is the right answer and we will say so on the call rather than after the invoice.
Three things that make Ortonville awkward for local search
The first one is the exact reverse of the problem Waterford has, which is the kind of thing you only notice if you work in both.
You have a real downtown. The mailing address does not respect it.
Waterford’s problem is that it has no center and its mail says Pontiac or Clarkston. Ortonville has the opposite problem: there is a genuine village with a Main Street, but the postal address reaches far beyond it. A business sitting on ten acres several miles out has the same town name on its mail as a storefront downtown.
Why it matters: a customer searching for something downtown and a customer searching from the far edge of that postal area are looking for different things, and your profile has to pick a side. The village storefront and the business on acreage should not be writing the same service area.
What to do: decide which one you are, set the service area to match, and stop trying to be both. Being specifically the downtown option beats being vaguely the whole area.
Your customers cross a county line without noticing
Ortonville sits at the northern edge of Oakland County. Plenty of businesses here draw work from the north and west, which means a meaningful share of the catchment is outside the county entirely. Most local marketing advice assumes your market stops at a boundary. Yours does not.
What to do: build the service area around drive time rather than around the county, and write for the towns you genuinely reach. This is the one place on this site where we would tell you to ignore the county page.
There is not enough data for the dashboards to be useful
At this volume, month-to-month numbers are noise. A change from nine calls to four is not a trend, it is a normal fluctuation, and reacting to it is how small businesses end up changing strategy every eight weeks and compounding nothing.
What to do: look at quarters against the same quarter last year, and count actual jobs won rather than clicks. The numbers that matter here are small enough that you can literally count them.
Who runs a business here
A rural trades economy. The list looks different from every other town on this site, and the difference is acreage.
- Property trades that need land to make sense. Excavating, septic install and service, well drilling, propane, grading, pole barns. These are the businesses acreage creates, and they have the biggest tickets on this page.
- Seasonal and weather trades. Snow plowing long private drives, tree work, brush clearing, storm cleanup. Two seasons and a large ticket per visit.
- Equipment and repair. Small engine, tractor, trailer, welding, fabrication. Often the only one of its kind for a serious drive, which is a ranking position most businesses would pay a fortune for.
- Downtown retail and food. The village storefronts, which are a genuinely different business from everything above and need a genuinely different page.
- Home services. Roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical. Same trades as everywhere, longer drives, higher fuel cost per job, which makes lead quality matter more than lead volume.
The pattern across that list: high ticket, low frequency, wide catchment. That combination is the best possible case for local search, and it is close to the opposite of the dense-storefront economy in the south of the county. The same marketing plan will not work in both places, which is the entire reason these pages exist separately.
Where Ortonville actually sits
North end of Oakland County. Look at how much space there is between things, because that is what makes the marketing different.
Two things are worth reading off that map before you spend money on local search here.
- Distance replaces density. In the south of the county your competitors are a block away. Here they are a drive away, which means customers choose on reputation and availability far more than on proximity. Reviews do more work than a pin on a map.
- The catchment reaches past the county. Draw your service area by how far you will actually drive for a job, not by the Oakland County line. For a lot of trades up here the honest answer crosses it.

Straight answers
The questions we actually get asked by businesses in Ortonville.
Is a town this small worth marketing in at all?
For a trade with a real ticket, yes, and more cheaply than anywhere else in the county. Low search volume is only half the equation. The other half is that almost nobody up here is competing properly, so the cost of a top position is a fraction of what it is in Troy. For a very low ticket business the answer is genuinely no, and we will tell you that on the call.
Do you actually come up here?
Yes. We have a client in Ortonville, which is why this page exists rather than being a template with a town name pasted in. It is a drive from Waterford and we do it.
Should I target Ortonville or the whole county?
Ortonville first, then the towns you genuinely serve, and probably not the county as a whole. A page that claims all of Oakland County from up here is competing with every agency in Southfield and Troy for a customer who was never going to call you anyway.
My customers come from outside the county. Does that break anything?
No, but it should change your service area. Build it around drive time rather than around the county boundary and write for the towns you actually reach. This is the one page on this site where we would tell you to ignore the county.
Nine calls became four this month. What went wrong?
Probably nothing. At this volume a five-call swing is noise, not a trend. Look at the quarter against the same quarter last year and count jobs won rather than clicks. Reacting to monthly numbers at this scale is how businesses end up changing strategy every eight weeks and never compounding anything.
