Web Design and Lead
Generation in Clarkston, Michigan.
Most towns have a busy season. Clarkston has a schedule, published months in advance, down to the date.
Almost nobody here markets against it, and the businesses that do are working with information their competitors also had and ignored.

What we do for Clarkston businesses
Six things, ordered for a town whose calendar is published before the year starts.
- Google Ads management First here, because you can time it. When the demand spikes are on a published schedule you can put spend against specific dates instead of guessing at a season, and turn it off in between. Almost no competitor is doing that.
- Local SEO The foundation underneath it. Clarkston and Independence Township are two names for overlapping places, which produces the same citation inconsistency Waterford has, and it is worth an hour of somebody’s attention.
- Web design and development The site itself. If event traffic is part of your market, the site has to answer a visitor question rather than a resident one, and most Clarkston sites are written only for residents.
- Print design and printing Signage, yard signs, menus, leave-behinds. Worth more in a town with a real walkable center and a seasonal influx than in a township strung along a highway.
- Ecommerce and portals Selling online or taking bookings. Genuinely useful if you are capturing event-night demand that will not phone you.
- Logo design and branding Only where it earns its money. In a village this size your reputation is already doing the work a logo would.
Event traffic is not the same as customers, and treating it as though it is wastes money. A crowd passing through is worth something to some businesses here and nothing at all to others. Which one you are decides whether any of this is worth doing, and it is the first thing we would work out on the call.
You already know when your busy nights are
The amphitheater publishes its season. The ski hill publishes its opening. Between them, a large share of the traffic through this town arrives on dates that were known in February.
That is unusual and it is worth sitting with for a minute. In most towns, “busy” is a weather guess or a vague sense that summer is better. Here, a restaurant, a bar, a salon, a gas station, a hotel or a shop within a few miles of the venue can look at a calendar in the spring and mark the nights that will be different, and then actually do something about them.
Very few local businesses do. They staff reactively, they post nothing, their hours in Google say the same thing on a sold-out Saturday as on a dead Tuesday in February, and they treat thousands of people passing their door as weather rather than as an audience.
-
The season gets announced Feb–Apr
This is when to build the plan, not in June. Mark the heavy dates, decide which ones you want, and decide which ones you would rather close early for.
-
Concert nights May–Sep
Pre-show is the window: people arrive early, eat, drink and look for parking. Post-show is mostly people leaving. Your offer should be aimed at the two hours before.
-
The quiet gap Oct–Nov
Fall color, then nothing. This is when to do the work you cannot do in season, the website, the photos, the review push, the email list you built all summer.
-
Snow season Dec–Mar
A different crowd, different hours, and heavily weather-dependent. Same principle as summer, less predictable dates.
The cheapest thing on this page. Put your real hours in Google for the heavy nights, in advance. If you stay open late on a concert night and your profile says you closed at nine, you are invisible to every phone within three miles at exactly the moment those phones are searching. It costs nothing and almost nobody does it.
The second cheapest: a post on your Google profile tied to the date. Not a coupon, a reason. “Kitchen open till eleven on show nights.” “Parking behind the building.” “Fifteen minutes from the gate, no line.” Those get seen by people who are already searching nearby and deciding fast.
Event traffic is not the same as customers
A few thousand people driving past you is a fact, not a business. What turns it into one is deciding, in advance, which of them you actually want.
Worth chasing Food and drink within a short drive of the gate, the pre-show window is real money Anything with capacity that goes unused on a weeknight Lodging, and anyone who benefits from an overnight stay Convenience, fuel, ice, last-minute anything on the route in The play is hours, posts, photos and a fast mobile site. Usually Presence.
Mostly noise Home services, a visitor from an hour away is never hiring your roofer Medical, dental, legal, accounting, nobody books a cleaning on the way to a show Anything sold on a considered, repeat, local relationship B2B of any kind Ignore the calendar entirely and market to residents. Usually Foundation.
Do not let the crowd distract you. Half the businesses in this town have nothing to gain from event traffic, and some of them lose staff hours and parking to it. If you are a contractor or a practice, the honest answer is that the schedule is somebody else’s opportunity and your customers are the households that live here year-round. Plan against those instead.
For the businesses that do benefit: the point is not one busy night. It is that a stranger stood in your building. If they leave without joining a list, following you, or leaving a review, you sold one meal to somebody you will never see again. Forty nights of that is a good summer and a bad business.
Clarkston, Independence Township, or both
The City of the Village of Clarkston is very small, and almost everyone who says “Clarkston” means Independence Township, or Springfield, or somewhere along the corridor. Mailing addresses, municipal boundaries and ordinary speech all disagree with one another.
For your listings, this matters the same way it does in Rochester, and the fix is identical: use the exact address your Google Business Profile is verified with, use that one string everywhere, and stop improvising. In your website copy, use both names naturally, because your customers do.
We wrote the full explanation, including a thirty-second test for whether your own listings already disagree with each other, on the Rochester page. It applies here without modification, so we would rather link to it than pad this page by repeating it.
Where Clarkston actually sits
North of us. A genuine village center, wrapped in a much larger township, with lakes on most sides.
Two things are worth reading off that map before you spend money on local search here.
- The village and the township are different markets. A downtown storefront and a trade working out of Independence Township share a name and almost nothing else, and the service area should say which you are.
- The lakes fragment proximity here too. Water between you and a customer means you are not in the same local result, however close you look on a map.

The lakes are a whole economy nobody writes pages about
Deer Lake, Parke Lake and the smaller lakes around them support a set of trades that barely exist in a landlocked town, and the search competition for them is remarkably thin.
A lakefront property is not just an expensive house. It is a seawall that fails, a dock that goes in every spring and comes out every fall, a boat that needs shrink-wrapping, a lawn that runs down to a shoreline, a septic system on a small lot near water, a well, and a boathouse somebody eventually wants converted. Many of these houses started as summer cottages and became year-round homes one addition at a time, which produces its own long tail of remodeling work.
-
Dock and seawall
Sharply seasonal, urgent when it fails, and almost nobody has built a real page for it. Ranking is genuinely achievable.
-
Boat service, storage, shrink-wrap
Two hard deadlines a year, and a customer who will search rather than wait if their usual guy is booked.
-
Septic and well
Small lots near water mean rules, permits and replacements. An emergency search with no patience for a slow website.
-
Shoreline landscaping, tree work
Mature trees over houses plus water-access complications. Storm work spikes hard and fast.
-
Remodeling and additions
Cottage-to-year-round conversions, and owners who spend on a house they actually love. Photos sell this more than copy does.
-
Pools, decks, outdoor living
Follows the same money and the same short season.
Why this is unusually winnable. These are narrow searches. Very few businesses have built a proper page for something like seawall repair or dock installation in this part of the county, which means the bar is low and it stays low for years. One well-built service page with real project photos can own a term like that for a long time, and the jobs behind those terms are not small ones.
If you are in one of these trades, the highest-value thing on your website is not the homepage. It is one honest page per service, with photographs of your own work, the towns you actually cover, and a phone number that gets answered. That is what a Foundation build is for.
Up here, service radius is a real business decision
Clarkston sits at the northern edge of the metro. Drive times get long fast, and a lot of businesses here quietly lose money on jobs they should have turned down.
South of here, twenty minutes covers an enormous number of households. From Clarkston, twenty minutes north covers considerably fewer. That geography changes several things at once.
- Your profitable radius is smaller than your listed oneIf your service area says “all of Oakland County,” you are inviting calls from an hour away for jobs that will never carry the drive. Decide what you actually want, then say so on the site.
- You compete against fewer people, and you reach fewer peopleRanking in Clarkston is easier than ranking in Troy. The market is also smaller. Both halves of that are true and a plan has to account for both, not just the flattering half.
- North and south are different strategiesSouth puts you into the dense, contested middle of the county. North takes you toward Springfield, Groveland, Holly and the Genesee County line, thinner, but far less competitive. Doing both half-heartedly is the common mistake.
- I–75 is the real shape of your marketPeople here run south toward Auburn Hills and Pontiac and north toward Grand Blanc. That corridor, not the county boundary, is your realistic reach.
The three rings section on the Detroit Metro page explains which searches are winnable at what distance. Clarkston sits in the outer band, where the map pack is comparatively easy and organic reach into the dense middle is hard-won.
Who this actually works for here
-
Strong Lake trades, dock, seawall, boat, septic, shoreline
Real demand, high ticket, and almost no competent competition in search Strong Home services, roofing, HVAC, remodel, tree
Older housing stock, mature trees over houses, owners who spend on their homes Strong Food and drink near the venue
A published calendar and a pre-show window most competitors ignore entirely Strong Dental, optometry, veterinary, physical therapy
Households search locally and then stay for years; reviews decide it Depends Village retail and salons
Small resident base. Works if you draw from the townships too; a village-only plan is thin Depends Trades wanting the whole county from a Clarkston address
Ranking here is easy and small. Ranking in the dense middle is a bigger, different build Weak B2B and manufacturing

Do these first, whether or not you hire anyone
All free, all doable in an afternoon. If you do only this and never call us, you will still be ahead of most of your competitors here.
- Put the season on a calendar in the springConcert dates, ski opening, festival weekends, the school calendar. Mark the nights you want and the nights you would rather close early. Then set your Google hours for those dates in advance.
- Fix the address stringWhatever your profile is verified with, used identically on your site, Bing, Apple, Facebook, Yelp and every directory. Search your phone number in quotes to find the listings you forgot existed.
- Build one page per service, not one page for everythingEspecially for the lake trades. “Seawall repair” and “dock installation” are separate searches by separate people with separate problems, and a combined services page ranks for neither.
- Photograph your own workTen real photos beats any amount of copy in these trades. Before and after, in daylight, on a phone. Stock photography is worse than nothing because homeowners can tell.
- State your service area in plain wordsWhich towns you cover and which you do not. People up here genuinely do not know whether a Clarkston business will drive to Holly, and they will not call to find out.
- Ask your last twenty happy customers for a reviewIndividually, by name, with a direct link. Not a mass email. In a smaller market this moves the map pack faster than it does anywhere dense.
The longer version is our free local playbook. No email required to read it.

When we say no. If you are a village business whose sales come from foot traffic and people who have known you for twenty years, and your profile is already clean, there is nothing here worth paying for. Take the free list above and keep your money. We would rather say that now than charge you monthly to maintain something that was already fine.
If you are not sure which fits, the two-minute fit quiz will tell you, including when the answer is “neither, yet.”
Questions people in Clarkston actually ask
Is the concert traffic actually worth marketing around?
If you sell food, drink, fuel, convenience or a bed, yes, and the plan should be built in the spring, not in July. If you are a contractor, a practice or any kind of B2B, no. A visitor from an hour away is never hiring your roofer. Roughly half the businesses in this town should ignore the calendar entirely, and knowing which half you are in is the whole decision.
What is the single cheapest thing I can do?
Set your real hours in Google for the heavy nights, in advance. If you stay open late and your profile says you closed at nine, you are invisible to every phone within three miles at the exact moment those phones are searching. It costs nothing, takes ten minutes, and almost nobody does it.
Should my listings say Clarkston or Independence Township?
Whichever your Google Business Profile is verified with, used identically everywhere else. There is no strategic advantage to one over the other, the advantage is entirely in picking one and never varying. Full explanation on the Rochester page, where the same problem is worse.
I do dock and seawall work. Is there enough search volume up here?
Less volume than a metro trade, and far less competition. That trade-off usually favors you, because the jobs are large and the people searching are ready to hire. A narrow term you actually own beats a broad term you place tenth for. One proper page per service is the whole strategy.
Should I list my service area as all of Oakland County?
Probably not. From up here that invites calls from an hour away for jobs that will not carry the drive, and it dilutes the signal for the towns you genuinely serve. Name the towns you want. Turning down bad-fit calls is a business decision, not a marketing failure.
My competitor has more reviews. How far behind am I?
Recency and steadiness matter more than raw count. Forty reviews spread over three years beats a hundred that stopped two years ago. In a smaller market, a business that adds two a month catches a stalled competitor surprisingly fast. Start asking, individually, this week.
Does the Michigan seasonal calendar apply here?
Yes for the trades, more sharply than most places, because the lake work compresses into a short window at both ends of the year. For anyone working the event calendar it does not; you are on the venue’s schedule instead. The Michigan page covers the weather-driven version.
You are in Waterford. How far?
About fifteen minutes. Close enough to meet easily, and your rankings follow your address rather than ours. We are not going to invent a Clarkston address to look local, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. Where we are.
Fifteen minutes, straight answer
Tell us who your customers actually are, households along the corridor, lakefront owners, or people passing through on a show night. We will tell you which engine fits, which calendar you are on, what it costs and when we could start. If the answer is that you should fix your hours and keep your money, we will say that too.
